Class Descriptions

  Metalsmithing Soldering

Introductory Metalsmithing  Workshop:
Presentation (includes a comprehensive handout) will provide students with the information needed to set up a metalsmithing workspace necessary to complete basic jewelry making projects with non-ferrous metals such as silver, copper, brass,etc.

Demonstration to include suggested tools and safety instruction for basic metal work 'without the use of solder'. Intended class projects at the students discretion but demonstrations will include sawing flat silver sheet, forging wire, sanding, doming, stamping, piercing and finishing. Flexible shafts provided for use in workshop.

Raw materials (flat sheet silver and wire) and miscellaneous tools provided for use in workshop.

Small projects such as beading wire (making headpins), preparing bracelet/necklace clasps, cutting out charms/pendants and constructing earring wrapped loops are suggested. Supplies and raw materials provided.

Introductory Soldering workshop: Presentation (includes comprehensive handout) will provide students with the basics of setting up a soldering workbench. Instruction covers various aspects of safety when working with compressed gas and heat.

Handout provides examples of tools, solder, soldering fluxes and equipment needed for soldering. A number of techniques will be demonstrated and students will receive hands-on practice. Supplies and raw materials provided.
